Bridge is Thriving in Derbyshire
Yes it's official; Bidge is thriving in Derbyshire! There will be two new teams in the DCBA Teams of Eight Winter Competition so a sixth league has been created. The first new team is from Matlock Club, due to the efforts of John Boadle. Iris White at Ringwood has been running classes and Ringwood Blue Team will also be making their debut this September.
Phil Upton runs successful beginners' and improvers' groups at Pentrich. Chesterfield Club, under the expertise and enthusiasm of Wendy Watson and John Squires, continues to flourish. Mary and David Marshall's clases at Spondon are popular and this year there will be a good pool of players to draw upon to play for Derby E and East Midlands Orange.
Ken Smith, who generously captained beginners Derby E for several years, taking them up to Division 4 last year, has accepted promotion (along with 3 Derby E team-mates) to Derby D. Pym Berry is going to continue to nurture East Midlands Orange. Ken and Pym would both be valued team-mates in top teams so their help with new players is much appreciated.
Table numbers at Ripley, Allestree and Markeaton Clubs are consistently high. Ringwood Club, under the efforts of Mick Gavigan, is growing and averaged 8 tables per session in July. This club is thriving and has recently been successful in winning a grant to buy Bridgepads and the associated sequipment.
If you know anyone who would like to take up Bridge this September, please contact Mary (mary@dcmarshall.freeserve.co.uk) who will direct you to a teacher in your area.
