Clive's Bike Ride

Noted below are Clive Holland's details of his planned ride for charity. (Clive is secretary of the Rolls Royce Bridge Club).

Hi,

I am going to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats between 5th and 17th September 2010.  I will cycle a total of about 940 miles and climb over 35,000 feet.  I will be aiming to cycle an average of 80 miles a day.  I will be trying to post details of each day on my facebook event, search for me if you want to have a look; the links below are attached to this event also.  Rough route details are given at the end.

I will be raising money for Epilepsy Action, British and Breast Cancer Care.  All of these charities support people who suffer from diseases that I have been personally touched by.

My wife has Epilepsy, she was diagnosed in 1986, and she has had much support from this charity especially when we started a family.  She is now controlled on her drugs and has been fit free whilst awake for several years and has been able to get back to driving.

Epilepsy Action is the national charity supporting sufferers and their families.  Money raised will help fund their freephone and e-mail helplines, as well as research into attitudes about epilepsy.  Epilepsy Action is celebrating its diamond jubilee this year, although when founded in 1950 it was call the British Epilepsy Association.  Its aims include improving the quality of life for epilepsy sufferers and improving epilepsy services.  It also raises awareness of the condition.

My father suffered with lung problems before his death in 2004.  In 2006 my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and has had a mastectomy and reconstruction since.  She now is free of the disease and will be supporting me on my ride.

Please ‘gift aid’ your donation if you are a UK tax payer; as the charity will get extra money from the government at no cost to you.

I will be circulating sponsorship forms around and will have some at my desk if you wish to send me an e-mail.  Alternatively I have set up three pages on ‘JustGiving’ (one for each charity).  The links are below.

http://www.justgiving.co.uk/Clive-Holland-epilepsy

http://www.justgiving.co.uk/Clive-Holland-lung

http://www.justgiving.co.uk/Clive-Holland-cancer

Alternatively search for me on the JustGiving home page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Gold Cup Congress

At last weekend's Gold Cup Congress held in the superb Peebles Hydro Hotel, Derbyshire's Judy Lomas & David Wright finished 11th out of 148 in the main Pairs event.

They started off rather indifferently but won their last 6 matches to overtake many internationals.

That other well known Derbyshire pair Amanda Grimsey & John Sowter didn't fair quite so well, claiming that with the whiskey starting to flow at 5 o'clock (in the morning) they were somewhat handicapped. Amanda admitted that she had skipped the generous portions of haggis at the breakfast buffet - a pity - haggis is a well known hangover cure.
