Matlock from Derbyshire won the 1st Division, Woodborough from Nottinghamshire won the 2nd Division and Nottinghamshire's Mechanics the 3rd Division.

Nottinghamshire have overcome their previous uncomfortable position to lead overall by 74 IMPs, after this second of three matches.

All 3 Derbyshire teams lost to Oxfordshire on Sunday, 7th February, 2010.

The 1st team needed a 20-0 win to have a chance of winning the Dawes, but lost 7-13 after throwing away a good start.

Worcestershire v Derbyshire

The League positions are a bit confusing with some teams having 1, 2 or 3 matches to play. The 1st team are leading but with each of their nearest rivals having an extra match they are likely to be overtaken. The 2nd team are the holders of the Porter Cup, but are unlikley to repeat their success. However, the 3rd team are in a very good position to win the Markham Trophy.

Tollemache Qualifier at Hinkley

Good luck this weekend to our Derbyshire team.  Representing the county this year are Peter Kelly (Captain), Alex Hogg, John Squibb, Paul Madden, Don Smedley, John Griffin Richard Edwards and Bob Ross.

Derbyshire just failed to qualify for the Final, finishing 4th with 2 to qualify in their Section C.

For EBU details, Click here

For all the card details with par analysis, click on County Matches above.

A Match Summary from Richard follows:

Saturday started with a good draw, the two seeds in our section were Berks & Bucks and Gloucestershire, and there were no really strong un-seeded teams. The format in our section was six half matches on Saturday afternoon, two full matches Saturday evening, then finishing the half matches between 11am and 4pm on Sunday.

The first two half matches were good on Saturday, we were +109 against Herefordshire and +68 against Mid Wales. Reality fought back when we ended -25 against Notts and -4 against Gloucestershire. The finish was a bit better with +37 in the Berks & Bucks match and +4 against Leicestershire. At the finish of Session 1 we were in first place with a bunch of teams close behind and two teams trailing.

In the evening we weren’t so good, losing 8-12 (-16 imps) to Hertfordshire and 2-18 (-81) to Staffs & Shrops. On Board 12 in the Hertfordshire match partner had a 50-50 guess to find the lady and went wrong when a 3rd and 5th lead didn’t let him place the missing length, that cost 31 imps and 4 VPs. Board 29 in the other match cost 40imps when neither of our North-South pairs bid a close 4H and both of theirs did. The cross-imp scoring where both North-South pairs score with both East-West pairs produces 4 imp scores which can add up quickly on a poor board. At midnight when we retired to the bar we had dropped to fourth, with six teams still in contention for the two qualifying places.

On Sunday we again started well, -12 against Hereford still gave us a 19-1 win and adding 53 against Mid Wales converted that score to a 20-0 win. We now had four tough matches where we needed to gain points in at least two, and not lose any in the others. This proved to be too difficult a target as we lost a further 17 against Notts while picking up 23 against Gloucstershire. The 12-8 win against the latter was an improvement, but the feeble 5-15 loss to the neighbours looked to have scuppered us. At our table against Berks & Bucks the match looked fairly flat, six routine games where the opponents had not bid their close one, not what we wanted. However on scoring up we had gained 112 imps without reply to close the match out 20-0. A 10-10 draw with Leicestershire would be enough. Sadly it wasn’t to be as one of their Norths found the lead to beat 3NT on Board 13 and then we lost 50 imps on 17 where both their North-South pairs played Six Hearts making, while one of our pairs was in Five Hearts + 1 and the other in 6NT -1. When the smoke cleared we had lost the match 3-17, losing 68 on the set, and with it the seven points we needed to qualify.

Overall it was a sound team performance, with the Butler scores of Madden-Squibb being +0.50, Hogg-Kelly +0.48, Edwards-Ross +0.25 and Griffin-Smedley -0.07, nobody did really well but nobody did badly either. To compete at this level we need a little more luck and occasionally a bit more consistency. The team are discussing some of the more interesting hands, and hoping for improvement, particularly against the neighbouring counties.

To end here is Board 30 from the final session, Paul and John bid this badly and West ended in 6NT, but sometimes when you are given a chance you must go for it:

     North
     S 10765
     H J74
     D AJ
     C 8743
West              East
S 83            S AQJ2
H 8              H AQ10965
D KQ987    D 54
C AKQ95    C J
     South
     S K94
     H K32
     D 10632
     C 1062

Paul Madden was West and got the lead of the Diamond Ace, on which South played the 10! This may have been intended as suit preference but it did not work as North continued with the Diamond Jack. (A heart switch would beat the contract.) Paul cashed his Diamond winners as North threw Spades, dummy Hearts and South excused a Spade. Now came Paul’s key play of a Spade to the Ace, North playing the 10, leaving South to guard both majors. The Jack of Clubs was overtaken and when the last of Clubs was played out, South was squeezed in this position:

     North
     S
     H J74
     D
     C
West       East
S 8        S
H 8        H AQ10
D           D
C 5        C
     South
     S K
     H K3
     D
     C
South discarded the Spade King and Paul made the last two tricks with the S8 and HA. A really well played hand!

County Match Stuff

Please don't give up on giving Ron a tough time for his County Match Summary (touch the County Matches link above). The setting of a NSPar has caused a lot of very useful debate. Email the webmaster above with any suggestions for improvement, particularly in the determination a suitable Par. Anyone can join in, whether they played in the match or not.

Don's Chuck Analysis has been added to the comments for the NSPar (touch the Red NSPar box for the relevant board to see what he has to say in his unique style).

The performance is a little slow at present when you first select a match(about 15-20 seconds - just wait). Things will improve shortly, I hope.

County Match Summaries

To view a summary of the card results for the previous two DCBA County Matches, click here

Select either the 5th April Oxford Match or the 21st June Mersyside Match. Then select the card of the pair you wish to view. The grid shows the board results in groups of eight. Touch the 'Next 8' ,etc. buttons to move around. Give me time to make this more instinctive and to include totals, help etc.

Touch the Red buttons in the As column to expand the notes for the relevant board. Touch the Hands button to view a scrollable panel of the hands for the relevant match.

The colours of the Net IMPs and Butler IMPs show whether the board was a poor result (Red), a neutral result (White) or a good result (Green or even Gold).

The Net IMPs results are based on an estimated absolute Par for the board, that Par determined by a local 'expert'. The B IMPs are the Butler IMPS as normally calculated against the Butler Datum. As you will note there are discrepancies on many of the boards. Some think that the Butler score is not a fair reflection of a Pair's real performance, since it depends on the score of the other players in the match, who, of course, may be less than expert themselves!

I hope to be expanding this to include how bidding/play/defence might/should have gone for each board.

Please email the Webmaster with any suggestions for improvement.

Derbyshire teams faired reasonably well in the County matches v Warwickshire on Sunday, 30th June.

County Match v Oxford

On Sunday, 20th May, Derbyshire played away to Oxford in the first match of the new season.

The first team got off to a good start, winning 12-8; but the second team lost 3-17 and the third team 1-19. Oxford are one of the strongest teams teams in the league so a 1st team win is particularly noteworthy.

Don Smedley, with some regret,  presented the captain of Oxford's 2nd team with the Porter Cup for winning the 2nd Division Championship for 2006. Derbyshire had held it for the two previous years, 2004 and 2005.
