Smedley's Team win Brigden Trophy

This  hand helped seal the victory. You hold:

S Kxxxxx

H

D Q10xxxx

CQ

Everybody was vulnerable. You are in fourth seat, after 1C P P. Your opponents are playing a five card major system, so that 1 of a minor can be 3+. Your bid?

Despite the webmaster's attempt to talk up last year's winners (Elliott, Sowter, Hall & Mallinson), Smedley's Team (Griffin & Marshalls) won by 44 IMPs.

The winning action on the hand above is pass. North scrambled home+1 For +90, despite the clubs breaking 6-1. But 4 hearts was cold for +620 and when Don could open the North hand (AQx, Jxxx, AK, AJxx) 1H, South with xx, K109xxx,xxx, xx  was worth a bid.

Teams of Eight Debacles

Several matches suffered disruptions, resulting in boards being removed last Wednesday. This has happened on several occasions during this last season. The following  simple check list for team captains could eliminate practically all the problems. 1. Make sure you speak to the players at least 24 hours before the day (not just an answer phone). 2. Make sure all players know exactly where the venue is, and meet them at a known collection point if any doubts exist. 3. Ensure everyone has a contact phone number in case of accidents or emergencies.

I realize for most, it is either preaching to the converted or shutting the door after the horse has bolted, but a reminder could save other such frustrating evenings for many. Wendy

Last nights teams of 8 results

Congratulations to British Rail A and Rolls Royce A who both won 20-0.  A special mention is due to Derby C who took 3 vps from East Midlands White who have already won Division 1.

The current standings are:

Division 1 East Midlands White dominate with 165, followed by Briish Rail A on 114.  Derby A are lurking in 3rd place on 102 but they have a match in hand.

In Division 2, the situation is very close as only 4 vps separate the top 3 teams British Rail B (95), Ripley A (94) and Chesterfield A (91).  There are adjusted scores to be added to some of these totals, though.

Allestree Red lead Division 3 with 111 and Belper Yellow hold the second spot with 107.

In Division 4 Allestree Blue are lying in first place with 95, followed by Markeaton on 87.

It is still difficult to assess the situation in Division 5 owing to postponed matches, but the current leaders are Matlock B with 153 and Belper B with 130.

Adjusted Scores for Teams of Eight Matches

This is just to clarify how these adjustments are made.  If, for example, a match is called off at late notice because a player does not arrive within the time limits, that team is awarded zero victory points.  When all the results are in at the end of the season, the 'non-offending'  team receives either its own average or the reciprocal of their opponents' average,  whichever is the higher score.  In the meantime, I've put in a notional score of 10, but in most cases, this score goes up at the end of the season.

Last nights teams of 8 results

There are still a lot of postponed matches and captains have been trying hard to reschedule them.  The current scores do not give a true picture of each team's position in the league.  There are also several adjusted scores to be entered at the end of the season.  In this situation, the non-offending team will have been given a notional score of 10 for now.

The stars of the night were Burton A who won 20-0.

In Division 1, East Midlands White are now leading on 148, British Rail A have 94 but Derby A has a postponed match.

Last Night's Teams of Eight

Another disaster last night when 11 matches were postponed due to the weather.  I am leaving it to captains to decide for themselves whether it is fit for them or their opponents to travel.

In Division 1, East Midlands White had their worst result this season by beating British Rail A 16 -4, but they continue to dominate the competition and have dropped only 5 vps.  The real battle is for second place.

Rolls Royce should be congratuated for being prepared to field 3 teams last night.  Only 2 of their matches were played, however, with disappointing results.  Their B team were held to an 11-9 win by the less experienced Derby E team, and Allestree Green had a resounding 15-5 win against their C team.

A possible date for rearranged matches is next Wednesday January 20th.  This is the date for the National Pairs Qualifying heat at Spondon which must take precedence if players wish to compete in this event.  If your own premises are not available, matches can be accommodated at Spondon.

Matches Postponed

Due to the poor weather conditions, no Division 5 matches were played last night.  Would captains please do their best to rearrange these matches when the weather improves.  If you have venue problems, it is likely that you could play at Spondon if you wish.

Equally, all the Brigden Round 3 matches are delayed.  There are no free Wednesdays before March 24th.

Last night's delayed match between Belper Yellow and Ripley B resulted in a 17-3 win for Belper.  This has improved their position to second place (59), closing the gap on Allestree Red (62).

Eric White Cup

Wells had another fine win, this time overcoming George 20 - 0 to consolodate their lead in the County Teams of Four Competition. Madden overcame Floutier 18-2 with Elliott giving Kelly a 2nd defeat in a row, winning 11-9.

Winter Plate 2009/2010

In an unusually low scoring session, Mirand Vinecombe's team were winners of the 5th round of DCBA's Winter Plate with +19 IMPs.

David Taylor's team were 2nd with +15 IMPs. There will 10 Sessions over the winter, the best 7 scores to count.

Amanda Sowter's team are the current leaders on +150 IMPs, well ahead of  Wilson Howden on +32 IMPs.

Last Nights Results in Inter Club Division 5 Matches

East Midlands Orange were the stars last night winning by 17-3,  their best result yet.  At the halfway stage in the competition, the leaders are Matlock B with 98 VPs.

Winter League Matches on Wednesday November 25th

Belper Yellow and Matlock A were the stars this week both scoring 20-0 wins against their respective opponents.

In Division 1, Derby A succeeded where no other team has this season, taking a point from the steamrollering East Midlands White team.  EMW now have 99 points and are being chased by British Rail B on 72.

Unfortunately, Division 2 team East Midlands Green couldn't field a team and had to concede a walkover to Chesterfield A.  The latter lead the Division with 64, though this score will be adjusted at the end of the season.  British Rail B are lying second on 61.

There is a similar unfortunate situation in Division 3 when contenders Associates had a player significantly delayed in horrendous traffic jams.  As a result, Allestree Red are first with 62, Associates are on 51, pursued by Ripley B with 48 and an adjustment to come.

Allestree Blue lead Division 4 with a score of 74.  Rolls Royce B are behind them on 55.

In Division 5, Ringwood are currently first with 87, while Matlock B are close behind with 84.

This Week's Teams of Eight Results

In Division 1, East Midlands White have maintained their perfect score (now 80) and make British Rail A's respectable 54 look hopeless.  EMW still have to face the strong Derby A team who got all their bad luck out of the way last night against Matlock A who had a very good match to beat them 12 -8.

There was a frustrating evening in Division 2, when contenders British Rail B fielded only 7 players and had to concede the match; Ripley A have been awarded 10 VPs for now but this will be adjusted at the end of the season.  This means that Chesterfield A are now leading with 54, followed by British Rail B and Rolls Royce A both on 43.

Allestree Red are leading Division 3 on 55, closely followed by Associates on 51.  Ripley B had an excellent match to win 20 -0.

In Division 4, Rolls Royce B are currently first with 47, closely pursued by Allestree Blue on 45.

Ringwood is dominating Division 5 with a healthy lead of 74 and Matlock B have 66.
